Making Mountains Accessible
I help pensioners and older walkers discover Kerry's mountain passes and quiet lakes — at their own pace, without the pressure.
From Family Walks to Professional Guidance
I grew up in Kenmare, Kerry. Most weekends meant walks — sometimes short strolls around town, sometimes longer treks into the Beara Peninsula. My parents loved the outdoors, and they didn't let anything stop them from getting out there. That's where it all started for me.
After studying Environmental Science at University College Cork, I joined the Irish Ramblers Association. Spent five years there learning how people of all ages and abilities experience walking. But I noticed something: there wasn't much out there specifically for older walkers. Routes were either too easy or too difficult. There was no middle ground. No routes designed with pensioners in mind.
So I shifted focus. Started working directly with senior walking groups in 2012. Built routes based on what I learned — routes that don't feel dumbed down, that respect your pace, that show you real mountains without unnecessary risk. Healy Pass became one of my favourites. Glanmore Lake another. Over 2,000 guided walks later, I still get the same feeling when someone says, "I didn't think I could do this."
That's what drives my writing now. Every article comes from real walks with real people. Every tip, every warning, every suggestion has been tested on the ground. No theory. Just what actually works.

Inclusive Approach
Believing that age and ability shouldn't limit mountain access. Every guide, every article, every route considers diverse needs and capabilities.
Practical Know-How
Deep knowledge of Beara Peninsula trails, Healy Pass conditions, Glanmore Lake routes, and Kerry's mountain weather. Information you can actually use on the ground.
How I Approach Outdoor Recreation
Real Over Perfect
Mountains aren't perfect. Weather changes, bodies get tired, knees protest. I write about what actually happens on a walk, not what should happen in theory. That's why my guides mention specific rest points, realistic timeframes, and honest difficulty assessments.
Experience Over Age
Age is just a number on your birthday card. What matters is how you feel, what you're capable of, and what you want to experience. A fit 70-year-old can handle terrain that challenges a less active 50-year-old. I design routes around ability, not age brackets.
Safety as Foundation
You can't enjoy a mountain if you're worried about getting lost or injured. Every route I recommend includes navigation details, hazard warnings, and exit options. Safety isn't boring — it's what lets you relax and actually enjoy the view.
Pace as a Feature
Walking shouldn't be a race. Kerry's mountains aren't going anywhere. I structure routes around sustainable pacing — time to chat, time to rest, time to notice things. That's where the real joy happens.

Ten years of specialised experience in routes perfect for pensioners and older walkers
Healy Pass Routes
Gentle approaches to this iconic Beara Peninsula pass. I've tested multiple entry points and variations suitable for different fitness levels. Routes that give you the experience without requiring extreme fitness.
Glanmore Lake Loop
A beautiful coum lake walk that's genuinely accessible. The loop works well for older walkers because you're never too far from a natural turnaround point, and the scenery keeps you motivated throughout.
Weather Assessment
Kerry's mountains create their own weather systems. I understand how conditions change through the year and what that means for specific routes. Knowing when a route is safe and when it isn't is crucial for older walkers.
Accessibility Considerations
Surface conditions, gradient changes, exposure levels, distance from parking. I document everything that affects accessibility. You'll know exactly what you're getting into before you start.
