Healy Pass and Glanmore Lake
Gentle mountain hiking for pensioners in County Kerry
Why These Hikes Work for You
We've spent years helping older adults discover these trails. They're not about breaking records or conquering peaks. It's about steady movement, beautiful views, and knowing you can actually do this.
Both routes offer natural rest spots, manageable inclines, and paths that don't feel technical or risky. You'll walk at your own pace, take breaks whenever you need them, and see some genuinely stunning mountain scenery without feeling rushed.

What's the difficulty level?
Both routes are graded as easy to moderate. You're walking on established paths with gradual inclines. Most sections aren't steep, and there's plenty of opportunity to stop and rest.
How fit do I need to be?
You don't need to be an athlete. Regular walking fitness is enough. If you can walk for 30 minutes without stopping, you've got a good foundation to build from. We'll show you how to pace yourself properly.
What's the best time to go?
Late spring through early autumn is ideal. The weather's more stable, paths are dry, and the light stays long. Summer crowds are busier, but spring and autumn offer great conditions without the rush.
Do I need special hiking boots?
Good walking shoes with ankle support work fine. You don't need expensive hiking boots, but make sure they're comfortable and have decent grip. Breaking in new footwear before the hike is important.
Can I do these hikes solo?
It's safer with a buddy, but plenty of people hike solo. Make sure someone knows your route and expected return time. Bring a charged phone and let others know when you're back.
What if the weather turns bad?
Irish mountains change fast. If conditions look dodgy before you start, it's smart to reschedule. We've got detailed weather guidance and bailout strategies for both routes so you know what to do.
